How Do You Clean a Commercial Floor

Commercial floors receive a lot of foot traffic throughout the day. Accidental drops of equipment and spillage occur regularly in offices. Trips, slips, and falls are the most common job-related injuries.

Keeping floors dry and clean protects businesses from liability in the event of a slip, trip, or fall. It also gives employees a sense of pride – no one likes to work in a dirty and wet environment – and clients a sense of trustworthiness.

There are different floor types, and each requires a unique cleaning procedure to protect materials and finish the job right.

Here's a look at some typical floor types and their cleaning requirements

1. Tile Floors

Tile floors are low cost, durable and easy maintenance. For cleaning tile floors, make sure you have

  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Neutral Cleaner
  • Mop
  • Floor Fan

First, vacuum the entire area to remove any large debris. Remove obstacles, such as trash cans to ensure complete tile cleaning.

To a gallon of water, add one ounce of neutral cleanser. Using the cleaning solution, scrub the whole surface of the tiles. After the area has been thoroughly cleaned, use floor fans or air movers to properly dry it out.

For stubborn stains, use two to four gallons of water—scrub or mop in a figure-eight pattern, rather than repetitious side-to-side motions.

2. Concrete Floors

Concrete Floors are very easy to clean but need daily maintenance. You will need

  • Air mover
  • Bucket
  • Neutral-ph floor cleaner
  • Water
  • A dry mop or vacuum

For removing abrasive dust and dirt particles from the floor, use a dry mop or vacuum. When cleaning with water and a neutral-pH floor cleanser, keep in mind that the porous surface of concrete requires quick drying.

Make sure you leave on the concrete for a few minutes until the chemicals begin to break down the filth and grease.

Rinse the cleaning solution away after wet mopping with the neutral cleaner. Wash any remaining cleaner from the concrete with a bucket of water and a clean mop head. To properly dry the concrete floors, set up powerful air movers.

3. Carpet Floors

If you want your carpet to last, keep it free of debris and dirt. When dirt and debris accumulate on a carpet and people walk on it, the debris wears down the carpet fibers.

When cleaning a carpet, make sure you have

  • A vacuum
  • Carpet cleaning solution
  • Carpet-drying fan/Air mover

To maintain a clean carpet, do the following

Regular Vacuuming

Depending on your foot traffic, you should vacuum your carpet anywhere from 2 to 7 times each week.

Spot-Cleaning

When you are spot cleaning carpet, make sure you don't use a scrub brush or bristle brush. These will wreak havoc on the fibers of your carpet. Always wipe the spot with a clean, white rag.

Deep Cleaning

You should deep clean your carpet at least once every quarter, depending on the level of traffic in your office. Deep clean your carpet once a month if you have a lot of foot traffic or if you work in a healthcare facility.

4. Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floors require a gentler cleaning approach than tile or carpet. You can clean your hardwood floors using three ways.

1. Sweep them regularly using a dry or broom.

2. Mop with a microfiber mop rather than a sponge and a yarn mop. These mop heads waste a lot of water, which can cause hardwood floors to warp.

3. Finally, if you clean with a hardwood floor cleaner, use a solution with a precise pH balance to avoid damaging the wood. Don't use a cleaner that isn't intended for hardwood.
